Evolution of the Alphabet
Today’s post – a chart courtesy of Matt Baker at usefulcharts.com – the evolution of ancient runes into modern symbols of latin alphabet. You can trace how the original proto-synatic symbols depicting animals and tools and lacking any depiction of vowels eventually evolved into A through Z symbols we use today.
It was only around 8th century BC that the Greeks borrowed the Phoenician alphabet and gave the vowels an equal status as the consonants thus expanding and codifying the first true alphabet.
